🌟 Thank You to Our Incredible Scholarship Donors We are so grateful to the individuals, families, and organizations who generously support Suncrest College students through scholarships. Thanks to our donors, and with nearly all awards matched through the Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunity Scholarship (SIOS) program, which provides Government of Saskatchewan funding matched with donations from private sector and community-based partners, hundreds of students each year receive meaningful financial support. Our donors play an active role in creating their scholarship. They choose the award name, set the criteria, and decide whether it’s an entrance or internal award. From there, our team manages the promotion and application process, making it easy to give back. Each year, donors are invited to personally present their awards at our Scholarship Ceremony, a truly special moment for both donor and student. This year, we were honoured to welcome several new awards created in memory of loved ones. Yesterday, we were honoured to welcome Deputy Minister Drew Wilby and Assistant Deputy Minister Darcy Smycniuk from the Ministry of Immigration and Career Training to Suncrest College! Their visit included a tour of our Trades & Technology Centre (TTC), where they spent time in the Power Engineering Lab and Welding Shop, getting a firsthand look at how we're preparing students with job-ready skills. We wrapped up the day at our SERI site, highlighting our commitment to innovation and growth in professional and industrial firefighter training. Today, Suncrest College, Southeast College Saskatchewan, and the Yorkton Tribal Council officially marked the launch of a partnership for a new digital and workplace skills program designed to empower Indigenous peoples, newcomers, women, and youth in rural communities. Suncrest College's 21st Platoon is officially in the classroom, as the new intake of future Fire Fighters begin their training at the Saskatchewan Emergency Response Institute, or SERI. The program runs 20 weeks throughout the spring and summer at the site situated just outside of Melville. ☀️ Suncrest College Hosts CICan National Skills for Success Hackathon 🎉 On March 22 and 23, Suncrest proudly hosted the Colleges and Institutes Canada / Collèges et instituts Canada (CICan) National Skills for Success Hackathon, bringing together students from across Canada to collaborate on an innovative career pathway tool. Three Suncrest teams from Yorkton, Fort Qu’Appelle & Nipawin joined 34 teams nationwide to develop ideas that enhance workforce development. Though only six teams advanced to the final presentations, our students received incredible feedback from industry experts! We were honored to welcome Yann Martel, award-winning author of Life of Pi, for an inspiring talk with students, staff, and the community in Melfort. Thanks to Braden Olson, a former Suncrest College student and now a USask professor at Suncrest College, Martel joined us to share insights into his creative process, the deeper themes in his work, and how he explores life’s biggest questions - meaning, faith, and survival - through storytelling. Martel offered an insightful behind-the-scenes look at his writing, engaged in thoughtful conversation with attendees, and graciously signed books - making it an unforgettable experience for all who participated. 🌱💡 A Brighter, Greener Future at Suncrest College! 💡🌱 Our Applied Research team is making big strides in sustainability at the Trades and Technology Centre in Yorkton! 🚀 By upgrading 76 outdated light fixtures to energy-efficient LEDs, we’re not only reducing emissions but also dramatically improving visibility. ✨ The impact? ✅ 50% reduction in electricity use ✅ 35,620 kg fewer carbon emissions per year (that’s like taking six cars off the road!) ✅ $8,000 in annual energy savings ✅ Spaces are now 50% to 400% brighter, with an average increase of 786 lux!
